Project Accountant

Job Description and Job Scope

  1. Prepare the complete suite of monthly Project Reporting including but not limited to Project Summary Reports, Financial Summary Reports, and take action as required
  2. Compile weekly dashboard in preparation for review by the Project Accountant Manager
  3. Analyse and review project costs, revenue, work in progress (WIP) and debtors on a monthly basis.
  4. Assist in the provision of overall commercial and compliance support to Project Managers.
  5. Prepare and process revenue and cost adjustments to projects as required to comply with HSL Constructor revenue recognition policies.
  6. Assist with ensuring commercialisation of project from Project Manager is linked to the financial position
  7. Prepare and process project accruals and other general ledger journal entries.
  8. Prepare reconciliations of project module and general ledger accounts (Navision)
  9. Prepare and distribute adhoc reports for project managers and other internal customers
  1. Prepare the PCS (Project Control Statement) analytics and FCS (Financial Control Statement) actual financial data to ensure alignment of reporting with Navision.
  2. Assist with driving improvements in financial position and cash flows (particularly DSO and aged WIP within operations).
Staff & internal customer relationship
  1. Maintain good relationships and liaise with Project Manager(s), Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and other stakeholders to ensure information is being effectively exchanged and processed.
  2. Implement team development plans, improve productivity and provide constructive feedback where necessary.
  3. Ensure appropriate accountability and performance standards are met.
  4. Exercise supervisory ability by setting priorities, monitoring workflow, procedures and work practices, and allocating resources.
  5. Assist in ensuring team is actively engaged with business / project stakeholders.
Finance Processing
  1. Work closely with direct reports and finance team to complete the full suite of finance activities required including but not limited to Accounts payable, Cash Management, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, General Ledger and Payroll.
  2. Work with wider Group stakeholders to ensure that the process of intercompany transactions is in line with Group policy and procedures.
Governance and Compliance
  1. Work closely with external auditors and tax agents to ensure completion of all statutory requirements.
  2. Rigorously maintain the internal control environment to ensure no breaches of internal controls and that compliance activities are completed on a timely basis, such as balance sheet reconciliations, bank signatories, segregation of duties reviews.
Continuous Improvement
  1. Work closely with the Finance Manager/Assistant Finance Manager to develop, establish and implement improvements to ensure achievement of all financial goals and objectives
  2. Ensure the Project Accountant team is actively educating the wider Finance team on key projects (including nature, schedule, financial and non-financial position, risks)


Job Specific: 
  1. Sound project accounting knowledge, including Project Reporting, Accruals, Revenue Recognition, Work-in-progress, Billing and understanding the key functional impacts
  2. System knowledge, detailed Excel and key functional impacts.
  3. Ability to interpret and apply relevant accounting standards, corporate directives and contractual commercial terms.
  4. Ability to identify the key revenue and cost drivers of the business to understand and evaluate the nature and financial effects of the business activities.
  5. Proficient use of the most common Microsoft applications including intermediate/advanced knowledge of Excel to download and analyse data (pivot tables etc)
  6. Excellent problem solving and analysis skills with a high degree of analytical rigor.
  7. Superior account reconciliation skills.

Experience Required: 
  1. Previous experience in project accounting in the same or similar industry
  2. Use of the accounting packages such as Microsoft Navision or similar system advantageous.  In particular, a high-level of understanding of the features of the Project module within a fully integrated accounting system.
  1. Approximately, 8 years to include experience in accounting in a commercial environment.
  1. A recognised degree or equivalent qualification with an emphasis in quantitative discipline such as finance, economics, accounting or commerce major is preferred
  2. CPA or CA qualification preferred.
